It’s no surprise Americans have an extraordinary thirst for music. What is a bit surprising (and also disconcerting) is that we download more songs illegally than any other country in the world according to MusicMetric’s recent report on its investigation on file-sharing activities via BitTorrent. The report, called the Digital Music Index (DMI), showed that Americans pirated nearly 760 million songs via BitTorrent between January and June 2012 alone.
The numbers are grim, especially for Gainsville, FL which had the highest percentage of song piracy per capita. But, there is a silver lining. In countries like ours where there are services such as Pandora and Spotify, which both offer free and paid access to millions of songs, the rate of piracy is decreasing – unlike in countries like Brazil, where the illegal download rates are increasing.
Here in Utah earlier this year, Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, awarded a Gold Record by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for his work with the Utah SECURE Strike Force which recovered thousands of pirated CDs through arrests and seizures in Salt Lake and Weber counties.
